Is canvas photography art?
November 12, 2008
What is art? That’s one of the questions that has divided critics, students and art lovers for generations. Traditional art is lifelike pictures painted on canvas by masters of their art. Modern art can be anything that subverts the art genre, challenges it and questions what art is about.
The real question though is whether photography printed on canvas is art. Photography, whether performed by a master such as David Bailey or by your children at a party can be considered art because it produces a window on the world. A photo shows a snapshot in time, whether that’s a happy moment, a beautiful landscape or an unexpected occurrence. In every way photography can be considered art, so therefore as art it should be printed on canvas and displayed as art.
The mixture of photography and canvas represents the coming together of two different art forms to create a new art form, the canvas print, or photos to canvas. When photos are printed on canvas they become more than just photos, and when a canvas has photos printed on them it becomes more than just a canvas.
Canvas photography is a new form of art, one that can be enjoyed by all and created by anyone with a camera.
